in my early years of public writing, i would lead editorial units to publish ramadan content. it was the first time i was able to formally commission, edit, and pay writers. i brought in trusted friends and allies to help out, but ultimately, it was a self-imposed obligation.
as a result, for many years, ramadan was a month not of heightened religious reflection, but of professional crunch. i don’t regret doing those months, i don’t even feel odd about the phrase “ramadan content.” sometimes, we do what we have to in order to survive and try new things.
